Description
This norm-referenced test quickly measures attentional processes commonly disrupted in acute and chronic brain damage or disease. The VSAT consists of four visual cancellation tasks that require the respondent to cross out letters and symbols that are identical to a target. A stopwatch is required for adminstration. It yields an overall attention score and provides separate scores for left- and right-side performance to assess visual field defects, unilateral spatial neglect, or syndromes that affect the perception of portions of the visual space.
Reliability/Validity
Test-retest reliability of the VSAT is .95 for an average retest interval of two months. It correctly differentiated 84% to 86% of normal and brain-damaged subjects in validation and cross-validation samples. Sensitivity and specificity ranged from and .86-.87, respectively. Normative data are provided by age groups from 18 to 60+ years.
