Conners Early Childhood – Manual
The Conners Early Childhood™ (Conners EC™) assessment is the result of five years of intensive product research and development. Child psychologists, clinicians, paediatricians, and child psychiatrists can rely on the Conners EC to help identify when early intervention is required for various childhood problems.
The Conners EC is an innovative psychological instrument designed to assess the concerns of parents, teachers, and childcare providers about preschool-aged children. This instrument aids in the early identification of behavioural, social, and emotional problems. The Conners EC also assists in measuring whether or not a child is appropriately meeting major developmental milestones (Adaptive Skills, Communication, Motor Skills, Play, and Pre-Academic/Cognitive).
This tool provides information that may be useful to consider when determining whether or not a child is eligible for early intervention or special education and related services.

Key areas measured
Conners Early Childhood (CEC)
Number of items:
- Parent 190
- Teacher/Childcare provider 186
Administration time: 25 minutes
The Conners Early Childhood reports are available for use by both parents and teachers/childcare providers.
These reports include the Behaviour Scales, Developmental Milestone Scales, Other Clinical Indicators, Connors Early Childhood Global Index, Validity Scales, Impairment Items, and Additional Questions. These reports are most appropriately used in initial evaluations, and can also be used for follow-up evaluation and treatment monitoring. The Conners Early Childhood–Parent and –Teacher/Childcare Provider reports convey detailed information and provide a comprehensive view of the child’s functioning in terms of both problem behaviours and developmental milestones.
CEC Global Index (GI)
Number of items:
- Parent 10
- Teacher/Childcare provider 10
Administration time: 5 minutes
The Conners Early Childhood includes two 10-item indices, to be completed by parents and teachers/childcare providers. The Conners EC GI–P and the Conners EC GI–T are quick and effective measures of general psychopathology and helpful tools for monitoring treatment and preschool intervention. The Conners EC GI–P and the Conners EC GI–T are embedded in the full-length Conners Early Childhood reports or can be purchased separately.
Both of these indices include the 10 highest loading items from the original Conners Parent and Teacher Rating Scales (Conners, 1989, 1997) with updated normative data.
CEC Behaviour
Number of items:
- Parent 115
- Teacher/Childcare provider 116
Administration time: 15 minutes
The Conners Early Childhood Behavior reports are available for parents and teachers/childcare providers. These reports are appropriate for initial evaluations, but can also be used to monitor progress. These reports are useful when there are only concerns regarding a child’s behaviour, and developmental milestones have been met.
The Conners Early Childhood Behaviour parent and teacher/childcare provider reports include all of the Behaviour Scales, Other Clinical Indicators, the Conners Early Childhood Global Index, Validity Scales, Impairment Items, and Additional Questions.
CEC Behaviour Short
Number of items:
- Parent 49
- Teacher/Childcare provider 48
Administration time: 10 minutes
The Conners Early Childhood Behaviour parent and teacher/childcare provider short reports comprise subsets of items from the Conners Early Childhood Behaviour reports.
In addition to the Behaviour Scales, both reports include Positive Impression and Negative Impression Validity Scales, as well as the Additional Questions. The wording of items on the short reports is identical to that on the full-length Behaviour reports. The short reports are useful when administration of the full-length version is not possible or practical (e.g., due to limited time or when multiple administrations over time are desired).

THREE VALUABLE REPORT OPTIONS
Assessment Reports
Provide detailed information about scores from a single administration, presented both numerically and graphically. An individual’s scores are compared to those in the normative sample and elevations at the scale and subscale level are indicated.
Progress Reports
Compare the results of two to four administrations for the same individual to measure changes over time. These reports are ideal to use when monitoring treatment and intervention effectiveness.
Comparative Reports
Combine the results of different raters to provide an overview of an individual’s scores from a multi-rater perspective. This highlights potentially important inter-rater differences in scores.
